The Conversation You Have Not Had Yet

Every man is carrying something he has not said out loud.

Maybe it is the marriage that feels closer to a roommate situation than a covenant. Maybe it is the kid who will not look you in the eye anymore. Maybe it is the porn you swore you were done with in college. Maybe it is the drinking that started as a Friday thing and is now a Tuesday thing. Maybe it is the fact that you do not feel anything in church anymore and you are scared to admit it.

You have a list. Every man does. The question is not whether you have one. The question is whether you have anyone you have told it to.

Most men do not. Most men go their whole life telling their wife some, their pastor a sanitized version, their drinking buddies a joke, and themselves a lie. The whole list goes to the grave. It does not get healed. It just gets buried.

What we keep saying around the fire, and what we will keep saying, is this. The lie cannot survive being said out loud to another man who is not going to flinch. It lives in silence. It dies in the open.

Brotherhood is the place where you finally say the thing. Not in a roundtable confession where everyone goes around. Not in a structured small group with a workbook. In the quiet, off to the side, after the day is over, walking back to the truck. A brother says, how are you really, and means it. And the answer comes out.

That moment is why we keep building this thing. The range is the front door. The fire is the family room. The conversation in the parking lot at the end is the whole house.

What is on your list? When are you going to say it?

The next Fireside is the next door. Walk through it.
